Marie Brechbühl

Marie Brechbühl (born March 26, 1857 in Burgdorf BE , Switzerland ; † October 21, 1933 in Geneva ) was a Swiss teacher and pedagogue . She was a school founder and one of the first to introduce mixed-sex classes in Geneva.

Life

In 1875, Marie Brechbühl took over the management of a day school in Geneva with a dozen students as a qualified teacher and founded the Brechbühl School , now the Fondation de l'Ecole Brechbühl . Her school was open to students of all denominations, although she was a staunch Protestant. She worked according to Friedrich Froebel's method and was one of the first to introduce gender-mixed classes in Geneva. Their pedagogy was based more on experience and special attention to each child. She was also a co-founder of the Union des femmes de Genève women's association .
