Marie Carandini, Marchesa di Sarzano (born February 1, 1826 in Brixton, London , † April 13, 1894 in Richmond Hill near Bath, Somerset, England) was a British opera singer ( soprano ).

Marie Burgess was the daughter of the London coachman James Burgess and his wife Martha. In 1833 her parents immigrated to Tasmania , Australia . In 1843, Marie, who was only 17, married the Italian emigrant and aristocrat Jerome Carandini, 10th Marchese di Sarzano (1803–1870). The marriage, which all reports said was a happy one, had five daughters and three sons. From 1846 the couple lived in Sydney , where they received vocal training under Isaac Nathan and Lewis Henry Lavenu . Carandini soon had an excellent reputation as a concert and opera singer across Australia. After the death of her husband, she went on a vocal tour to New Zealand , India , the United States and Europe .

Marie Carandini, Marchesa di Sarzano died in 1894 of complications from cancer in Richmond Hill near Bath and was buried there.

Trivia

  • Her eldest daughter, Rosina Martha Hozanah Palmer (1844–1932), was also a celebrated opera singer (soprano).
  • The actor Sir Christopher Frank Carandini Lee (1922-2015), known for his portrayal of Count Dracula , was a great-grandson of Marie Carandini.
