Life

Brusse was a innovator in Dutch journalism. He was one of the first to describe situations and events from his own observation perspective. He was also one of the first to describe the interviews and conversations he conducted as a form of dialogue . He worked undercover (1898) for his series of articles on the shelters of Rotterdam seafarers . For decades he wrote daily reports and feature articles for the (then) Nieuwe Rotterdamsche Courant under the title Onder de Menschen (German: Unter den Menschen ). Many of his works have been published in book form. A bestseller was his book Het rosse leven en sterven van de Zandstraat (German: The red life and death of the Zandstraat ) about the Rotterdam whore and sailor quarter around the Zandstraat .

During the First World War , he reported extensively on the operations of Dutch doctors and nurses in the Balkans, both in newspapers and in book form. In 1915 he published The Horrors of War in Serbia on Dr. Arius van Tienhoven in Valjevo and two years later A Dutch hospital in a bombed-out city about Dr. Henri van Dijk in Manastir . In 2017, 100 years after the first edition, the Stichting Studiencentrum Eerste Wereldoorlog (Foundation Study Center First World War) published this last work again.

His play Boefje , based on the book of the same name published in 1903, enjoyed great fame and was performed many hundreds of times with actress Annie van Ees in the title role. In 1939 a film was made with the then 45-year-old van Ees in the cinemas. In 1903 he published a series called Boefje in the Nieuwe Rotterdamsche Courant.

Brusse spent the last years of his life with his family in Groet ( Noord-Holland ). He died in the hospital in Alkmaar in 1941 and is buried in the general cemetery in Schoorl .
