Kees Brusse (1979)

Live and act

The son of a journalist and an opera singer had stood in front of the camera for the first time at the tender age of eleven when the German-Jewish film director Kurt Gerron, who was working in exile in the Netherlands, asked him for the small role of Arjaan Gijzen in the initiation story Merijntje Gijzens Jeugd (1936) got. After the German Wehrmacht invaded the Netherlands in 1940, the very young Kees decided to leave school behind and try his luck at the theater. The Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam took the self-taught actor under its wing as a volunteer . Kees Brusse made his debut as a professional actor at the age of 16 with the Pietje Puck in the play Boefje , which his father once wrote. Brusse junior remained active in the theater until the liberation in 1945 and then went on tours abroad with Wim Sonneveld's cabaret troupe , which took him to Switzerland and Indonesia (which the Dutch still held as their colony at the time) . From 1952 to 1954 he was artistic director of the Rotterdamse Comedie.

With the beginning of the 1950s, film began to gain in importance in Brusses life. Since then he has been in front of the camera regularly, initially in cinema productions, later also in television films and television series. German directors such as Wolfgang Staudte , in whose youth drama Ciske - a child needs love, he impressed in 1955 as the understanding teacher of the neglected and rebellious title hero, as well as Alfred Bittins and Georg Jacoby brought in the good German-speaking Brusse for their productions. In later years the Dutchman was seen sporadically in one or the other German television film, such as the crime scene crime thriller Kressin and the painter's wife, or at the side of Armin Mueller-Stahl in Thomas Fantl's Gauner im Paradies .

At the same time, Brusse began directing films in 1956. In the film about the bloodless liberation of resistance fighters during the German occupation, Der Überfall (1962), he also helped his British colleague Paul Rotha as a dialogue director. Nevertheless, acting remained Brusses main field of activity. In the mid-1960s he played Commissioner Maigret in a Dutch crime series of the same name. In the course of the 1990s, Brusse, who had lived for many years from 1988 onwards in the Caribbean ( Bonaire , Netherlands Antilles), France and Western Australia ( Perth ), gradually withdrew from film and television work. In 2008 he presented his autobiography. In the last years of his life, the versatile artist, who had also worked as a speaker and on radio broadcasts, became increasingly blind. It was not until January 2013 that he finally returned home to Holland. Kees Brusse, who had been married five times in total and was awarded the Order of Orange-Nassau by Queen Beatrix in 1987, spent the last months of his life in the Rosa Spier Huis artists' home in Laren. Brusse had two daughters.
