Marie Kean (born June 27, 1918 in Rush , County Dublin , † December 30, 1993 in Dublin ) was an Irish actress .

life and career

Marie Kean grew up in the coastal village of Rush near Dublin and studied acting at the Gaiety School of Acting after graduating from high school . From 1949 she was a member of the famous Abbey Theater in Dublin for decades and gained a reputation on stage for being one of the best Irish actresses of her generation. She has appeared in famous Irish plays by John Millington Synge , Seán O'Casey and Brian Friel . In 1968 she starred in the world premiere of John B. Keane's successful piece Big Maggie . In addition to the Abbey Theater, she also played classic Shakespeare roles for the Royal Shakespeare Company at times . Kean's favorite role was that of housewife Winnie in Samuel Beckett's play Happy Days . She also played this role in a television production of the same name, which brought her the Jacob's Award - the Irish television prize - in 1968.

She also became known in Ireland through the popular radio series The Kennedys of Castleross , in which she spoke to the matriarch Mrs. Kennedy for the entire duration of the series from 1955 to 1973.

As a film actress, she was first seen in 1956 in Jacqueline at the side of John Gregson . She played her most famous film role in Stanley Kubrick's historical drama Barry Lyndon , in which she played the ambitious mother of the title character. She also starred in the comedic thriller When Katelbach Comes ... (1966) by Roman Polański and in David Lean's drama Ryan's Daughter (1970) in the role of a bigoted shopkeeper in an Irish village. She played her last cinema roles in 1987 in John Huston's James Joyce film adaptation of The Dead as Mrs. Malins and in Jack Clayton's film drama Judith Hearne 's great longing at the side of Maggie Smith and Bob Hoskins . Marie Dean last stood in front of the camera in 1990 for a TV series.

Marie Kean died in December 1993 at the age of 75. From her marriage to William Mulvey, who died in 1977, she had two children.
