Marie of Mecklenburg (1803-1862)
Marie Luise Friederike Alexandrine Elisabeth Catharina Duchess of Mecklenburg [-Schwerin] (born March 31, 1803 in Ludwigslust ; † October 26, 1862 in Meiningen ) was a Duchess of Mecklenburg [-Schwerin] and by marriage since 1848 Duchess of Saxony-Altenburg .
Life
Marie was a daughter of the Hereditary Prince Friedrich Ludwig zu Mecklenburg [-Schwerin] and his wife, the Russian Grand Duchess Helena Pawlowna , a daughter of the Russian Tsar Paul I.
Marie married the then Prince Georg of Saxony-Hildburghausen on October 7, 1825 in Ludwigslust . On October 22nd the bride and groom entered Hildburghausen with a ceremony ; the street specially laid out for this is still called today after the princess Marienstraße. A year later, Georg's father Friedrich became Duke of Saxony-Altenburg and the court moved into the new residence. Marie and Georg lived in the Charlottenburg Palace in Hildburghausen until 1829.
After that, the couple lived at Christiansburg Castle in Eisenberg . The local superintendent Klötzner described their apparently happy marriage (about Prince Georg): “ [...] in his love for his wife and sons the model of a real family father . "
After moving to Altenburg, Marie's husband took over the business of government in 1848 from his brother Joseph , who abdicated as a result of the bourgeois revolution . Marie is the founder of the Marienstiftung with women's association and work school as well as the Georgs-Marienhaus and the Evangelical Lutheran Mission Society in Altenburg. As a widow, she continued to live in Altenburg. The Duchess had a very close relationship with her son Ernst and her granddaughter Marie Friederike.
progeny
The marriage resulted in three sons, two of whom reached adulthood:
- Ernst I (1826–1908), Duke of Saxony-Altenburg from 1853 to 1908
- Albrecht (1827–1835), buried in the Helenen-Paulownen-Mausoleum in Ludwigslust
- Moritz (1829–1907)
