Prince Moritz of Saxony-Altenburg

Moritz Franz Friedrich Constantin Alexander Heinrich August Carl Albrecht von Sachsen-Altenburg (* October 24, 1829 in Eisenberg ; † May 13, 1907 in Arco ) was a prince of Sachsen-Altenburg from the Ernestine branch of the Wettins and presumptive heir to the throne of the Duchy of Saxony- Altenburg .

Life

Moritz was the younger son of Duke Georg von Sachsen-Altenburg and his wife, Duchess Marie zu Mecklenburg (1803-1862). After his training in Jena and Dresden, he initially served in the Bavarian military . On April 26, 1851 he joined the Prussian Army and was employed as a second lieutenant in the Guard Hussar Regiment in Potsdam . He was promoted to Rittmeister by September 1855 and on August 13, 1859 was promoted to major with the uniform of the regiment to the officers à la suite of the army. Moritz was president of the Osterlandes history and antiquity research society . The natural history museum in Altenburg is named after Moritz Mauritianum . After an extensive journey, he quit military service in 1857 and studied at the University of Bonn .

On October 15, 1862, the prince in Meiningen married Auguste (1843-1919), daughter of Duke Bernhard II. Erich Freund von Sachsen-Meiningen . On the occasion of his marriage, he received the newly donated Grand Cross of the Red Eagle Order from King Wilhelm I of Prussia .

In the Franco-Prussian War , Prince Moritz and Duchess Agnes were actively involved in the German Red Cross , of which he was honorary chairman of the regional association until 1904.

Since Moritz 'older brother Ernst I did not have a male heir to the throne from his marriage, Moritz was considered the Hereditary Prince of the Duchy. He died a year before his brother, which is why the claim to the throne passed to his son Ernst .

Moritz was the holder of numerous awards, including the house order of the Rautenkrone and the grand crosses of the Duke of Saxony-Ernestine House Order , the Guelphen Order , the Oldenburg House Order and Order of Merit , the House Order of the White Falcon and the House Order of Albrecht the Bear . Moritzstrasse in Altenburg is named after the prince.
