Marie Anna von Sachsen-Altenburg (born March 14, 1864 in Altenburg ; † May 3, 1918 in Bückeburg ) was a princess of Sachsen-Altenburg and, by marriage, Princess of Schaumburg-Lippe .

Life

Marie Anna was the eldest child of Prince Moritz von Sachsen-Altenburg (1829-1907) from his marriage to Auguste (1843-1919), daughter of Duke Bernhard II of Sachsen-Meiningen .

On April 16, 1882, she married the future Prince Georg zu Schaumburg-Lippe (1846–1911) in Altenburg . After the marriage, the couple resided in the newly furnished castle in Stadthagen and in 1893 Georg succeeded his father Adolf I in the government. The princess supported churches and schools; she is the founder of the Marie Anna Stift in Stadthagen.

At the castle Schaumburg in Rinteln there is a large alliance coat of arms of the Prince and Princess from 1908 on the outer gate. Marie Anna died in May 1918, allegedly due to an infection with corpse poison from the coffin of her husband, who died in 1911. She was buried in the Bückeburg mausoleum .
