The Marienkirche of Steyr is located on the town square , on the town hall side opposite the Pfarrberg .

The Marienkirche is not a parish church , but a branch church of the Steyr parish in which services are celebrated with believers from various parishes in the area; Baptisms, weddings and funerals are therefore rare.

history

Dominicans from Krems founded a religious settlement in Steyr in 1472 . For this purpose they bought a house on the town square from Georg and Wilhelm von Losenstein . The church was completed in 1478. However, the town fire in 1522 destroyed the church and the monastery building.

In 1559, Emperor Ferdinand I allowed the citizens to rebuild the church and the monastery. They wanted to accommodate the Protestant Latin school , which at that time was located in a building in Berggasse , which was not suitable for this purpose. However, this permit was subject to the condition that, if necessary, the Dominicans could claim the building again for reimbursement of costs.

But as early as 1572 the eastern wing of the school was collapsed by the floods. The 60 students living there were barely able to save themselves from the flood.

The church was returned to the Dominican Order on November 10, 1624 in the course of the Counter Reformation , and the monastery building on February 12, 1625.

The church received its baroque appearance in the years 1642 to 1641. The construction work was led by master mason Hans Tanner .

In 1865 the Dominican monastery was closed and the diocesan bishop of Linz , Franz Joseph Rudigier , handed the church over to the Society of Jesus .

From 1911 the monastery served as a Jesuit residence until the order withdrew from Steyr in 2019. The front wing of the former monastery building has been used as a post office since 1911, the rear wing was used for residential purposes, while the former, richly stuccoed refectory was used as a machine shop for a long time after the Second World War .

In 1976, the hen-side wing was acquired by the Diocese of Linz and has since served as an educational center under the name Dominikanerhaus. The last restoration of the church (inside and outside) took place between 1975 and 1978.

Building description

Church and former monastery building

The church is not in line with the lower row of houses in the town square, but is set back a little. It is one of the first creations of monastic building activity after the Counter Reformation. The model was the St. Michaels Church in Munich. The facade has two towers. The statue of Our Lady is placed above the arched main portal, and in the gable is the statue of St. To see Dominic.

The church was renovated between 1774 and 1778 with a rococo interior that is well worth seeing . During this time the towers were also redesigned. The mighty high altar with the artistically valuable statue of Mary, the pulpit with many figures and a new organ were also installed during this time. Some side chapels had already been decorated with rich baroque stucco work. The mayor of Steyr Maximilian Luckner (1660–1677) was buried in the crypt in 1680.

Around 1650, the Steyr sculptor Elias Sturmberger designed two chapels that flank the forecourt. From 1788 to 1851, a covered entrance to the church led through this forecourt.
