Maria Evgenevna Voss

Marija Yevgenyevna Voss ( Russian Мария Евгеньевна Фосс ; born September 19 . Jul / 1. October  1899 greg. In Grodno ; † 9. September 1955 in Moscow ) was a Russian - Soviet prehistorian .

Life

Voss was the daughter of the tax officer of German origin Yevgeny Nikolajewitsch Voss, who had received a legal education at the Voronezh Lyceum and worked in tax administration. In 1908 the family came to Voronezh, and Voss attended the Voronezh Girls' High School with graduation in 1916. After the October Revolution , Voss studied at the Voronezh University in the Faculty of Social Sciences (1920–1922) and in the archaeological department of the Voronezh branch of the Moscow Archaeological Institute ( 1921-1922). In addition, she worked as a research assistant at the Museum of the Voronezh Governorate .

In 1922 Voss went to Moscow and graduated from Moscow University (MGU) in the history department with Vasily Alexejewitsch Gorodzow in 1925. In the same year she received a position in the Historical Museum (GIM) . She often went on archaeological expeditions to the northern areas of the RSFSR to conduct explorations and excavations . She wrote important works on the regionalization and periodization of the Neolithic (together with Alexander Jakowlewitsch Brjussow ) as well as for the Bronze Age . She examined the settlement Kubenino the Kargopol -Culture and since 1929 the settlement Weretje at Lake Lacha , which gave the Weretje culture its name. In 1940 she defended her candidate dissertation on Kargopol culture.

In 1944 Voss also became an employee of the Moscow Institute for the History of Material Culture of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR . In 1953 she defended her doctoral dissertation on the prehistory of the northern European part of the USSR for a doctorate in history .

Voss died after a long and serious illness.
