Marija Petkova ( Bulgarian Мария Петкова , English transcription Mariya Petkova , nee Вергова - Wergowa - Vergova ; born November 3, 1950 in Plovdiv ) is a former Bulgarian discus thrower .

She won the silver medal in the discus throw at both the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal and the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow . Both times she was only beaten by the East German Evelin Jahl .

At the European Athletics Championships in Athens in 1982 she was second, at the 1983 World Athletics Championships in Helsinki third. In addition, she was twice the winner of Universiaden , namely in 1975 in Rome and 1977 in Sofia . She was also the Bulgarian national champion in discus throwing six times (1974, 1976, 1977, 1981, 1982, 1984).

With her personal best of 71.80 m, set up on July 13, 1980 in Sofia , she exceeded Evelin Jahl's world record, only two months old, by 30 centimeters. It was not until May 22, 1983 that the Soviet athlete Galina Savinkova managed to increase it to 73.26 m.

Marija Wergowa-Petkowa is 1.85 m tall and weighed 105 kg at competition times.
