Marilyn Neeley

Marilyn Neeley (born December 26, 1937 in Los Angeles , † May 30, 2007 in Silver Spring ) was an American classical pianist.

life and work

Marilyn Neely was born on December 26, 1937. Her father was a superior court judge , her mother Vivian was a piano teacher. Neeley showed great interest in music at the age of three. From the age of 5, she initially received private systematic music lessons. At the age of eight she made her debut as a child prodigy in her hometown. She graduated from USC with a degree in music and received a Masters in Theology from the same university.

In 1968 Neely first taught African American high school students at a Methodist mission school in Camden, SC. In the same year, she moved to the Music Faculty at Ohio State University , where she taught until 1972. There she met her future husband, the violinist Robert Gerle . They married in 1970. Both of them recorded all Beethoven sonatas for violin and piano for television. These recordings were broadcast on American television. Both received the Emmy in 1970 for these recordings . Neely and her family moved to Baltimore in the early 1970s . From 1972 to 1984 Neely and her husband Gerle both taught at the University of Maryland Music School and gave concerts together. Most recently, Neeley was the chairman of the piano faculty at the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC.

Neely performed as a piano soloist with American symphony orchestras from Boston to Los Angeles.

Neeley died of pneumonia on May 30, 2007 at Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring. She was being treated there for bone cancer.
