The Marina Coastal Expressway (abbreviation: MCE, Chinese  滨海 高速公路 , Pinyin Bīnhǎi Gāosù Gōnglù , Malay Lebuhraya Pantai Marina ) is the second newest expressway in Singapore's motorway network. Construction began in 2008 and the opening took place on December 29, 2013.

history

Feasibility studies for the expansion of the KPE to MCE began on April 9, 2006, ahead of the 2006 general election to help relieve the East Coast Parkway , and will be referred to as the Marina Coastal Expressway. Feasibility studies were carried out for the new expressway, which was later announced on July 28, 2007. On July 27, 2007, the Land Transportation Authority announced that it had approved the construction of a new 5 km Marina Coastal Expressway (MCE) on a road costing US $ 2.5 billion.

The expressway consists of the 3.5 km underground tunnel, while the rest are underground or underground and see the Strait of Singapore . The underground tunnel is a 420 meter long stretch that runs under the sea floor and is 150 meters from the Marina Barrage. This had brought with it special technical challenges in tunnel construction, as large amounts of water were drained from the dam from time to time. At its deepest point, the expressway is about 20 meters below the sea floor.

The 5 km long MCE is Singapore's most expensive expressway. On April 28, 2009, the Land Transportation Authority announced that it had placed approximately $ 4.1 billion in contracts, far more than its original estimate of $ 2.5 billion. The construction of the MCE also required an underwater excavator. More than 22 hectares of land were reclaimed to build the MCE. In contrast, the KPE, which is 12 kilometers long and has parts that run under canals and rivers, costs just $ 1.74 billion. Construction will require the demolition of several buildings in Marina South, including the country clubs and steamboat restaurants.

When the MCE opened, the ECP segment between Central Boulevard and Benjamin Sheares Bridge became Sheares Avenue , while the segment from AYE to Central Boulevard ( Telok Ayer Flyover ) will be permanently demolished.
