Mario Castronari

Mario Castronari (born May 31, 1954 in Berlin , Germany) is a British bassist and composer of fusion and creative jazz .

Castronari began his musical career in Germany, where he worked in the trio of Bob Degen , and in the groups of Heinz Sauer and Thomas Cremer in 1979 , but also played in the German-French jazz ensemble with Albert Mangelsdorff in 1981 and toured with Attila Zoller . In 1982 he left Frankfurt am Main to later settle in London . He became known there through his collaboration with the pianist Howard Riley ; with him and drummer Tony Marsh he formed the Feathers Trio . In 1995 the trio played the album Descending Circles together with Elton Dean . He also worked with Iain Ballamy , Don Rendell (1991) and David Jean-Baptiste (1993), was a member of the Duncan Lamont Big Band and Gail Thompson's Big Band , on whose albums Jazz Africa and JADU (Jazz Africa Down Under) Enja he participated.

Castronari gained wider attention through his work as bassist and composer for the fusion formation Roadside Picnic , which he formed with saxophonist David O'Higgins . In 1990 the concept album For Madmen Only was created based on motifs from Hermann Hesse's novel Der Steppenwolf . Guest musicians such as saxophonist Mornington Lockett and trumpeter Steve Waterman contributed to the album La Famille , which was thematically dedicated to British 70s jazz rock and progressive rock .
