Career

Schmidt studied physics and astronomy at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg and at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg . He did his community service at the Federation for Environment and Nature Conservation Germany . As early as his school days he was involved in the Baden-Alsatian citizens' groups in the protests against the Wyhl nuclear power plant . He headed the environmental protection student group in Freiburg, and later the environmental protection tutorial at Heidelberg University , from which the lecture series environmental protection (1985–1995) and the interdisciplinary environmental studies (1995–2005) emerged on his initiative. In the 1980s he was involved in setting up the Institute for Energy and Environmental Research Heidelberg (IFEU). In between he was head of department at the environmental authority of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg from 1989 to 1990. Since 2012 he has been a member of the Advisory Board of the Baden-Württemberg state government for sustainable development. Fields of work

Schmidt's early work focuses on waste avoidance (1985–1986), radioecology (1986–1990), traffic emissions and traffic avoidance (1990–1995). In 1991/92, on the initiative of the then Mayor of Heidelberg , Beate Weber, he headed the first major municipal climate protection concept in Germany. Other concepts followed, e.g. B. for Wuppertal or the Expo in Hanover . Since the early 1990s he has been involved in the implementation of the first life cycle assessments and the development of methods in the field of energy and material flow management. He is currently working on operational resource efficiency , raw material issues and the relationship to climate protection .
