Marion Greenwood (born April 6, 1909 in Brooklyn , † August 20, 1970 in Woodstock ) was an American painter and graphic artist.

biography

Marion Greenwood is the sister of artist Grace Greenwood . She completed her artistic training at the Art Students League of New York and the Paris Académie Colarossi . Until 1932 she devoted herself mainly to lithography as well as oil and portrait painting and then temporarily went to Mexico until 1936 , where she created some wall paintings on behalf of the Mexican government during the prevailing muralism . Even after her return, she continued to devote herself to wall painting until, after a trip to Europe in 1940, she returned to easel painting. During World War II she worked as the only female war painter commissioned by the United States Army . In addition to several war bonds she designedposter was taken as part of a rehabilitation program for wounded soldiers of the Army Medical Department (AMEDD). In 1944 she gave her first solo exhibition in New York. from 1946 she traveled through India, China and other countries and recorded her experiences artistically. Greenwood exhibited her pictures nationally and internationally in many established houses. From 1954 to 1955 she was visiting professor of fine arts at the University of Tennessee , where she painted a large mural at the university center.
