Mark Avery

Mark Ian Avery (born March 29, 1958 in Bristol ) is a British non-fiction author , blogger and conservationist .

Life

Mark Avery is the son of Charles and Megan Avery. In the summer of 1976 he was a caretaker in the St. Cyrus National Nature Reserve. After graduating from Bristol Grammar School, he studied at Downing College at the University of Cambridge , where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Applied Biology in 1979 and a Master of Arts in 1981 . In 1983 he was with a dissertation on the winter activity of the Common Pipistrelle ( Pipistrellus ) for Ph.D. PhD from the University of Aberdeen . From 1984 to 1985 he was a research fellow for the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) at the Edward Gray Institute (EGI) at the Zoological Department of the University of Oxford . In 1986 he was a research assistant at the Forestry Commission. From 1986 to 1991 he was a research biologist and then a senior research biologist at the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds . From 1998 to 2011 he was Director of Conservation at the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds. From 2010 to 2012 he was director of the Freshwater Habitats Trust. He has been the director of the World Land Trust since 2017.

In addition to several books, including a work on the passenger pigeon , Avery has published numerous scientific articles in the journals Ibis , Journal of Animal Ecology , Journal of Applied Ecology , New Scientist and Nature .

He has had an environmental blog for The Guardian since 2010 .

In 1985, Avery married Rosemary Cockerill. From this marriage a son and a daughter were born.
