Mark Chesnutt
Mark Chesnutt (born September 6, 1963 in Beaumont , Texas ) is an American country singer.
Beginnings
As the son of Bob Chesnutt, who had recorded a few singles on smaller labels in the sixties and seventies, Mark came into contact with country music at an early age . His father's extensive record collection was an almost inexhaustible source of classic country songs (due to his childhood repertoire of more than 1000 songs, Mark Chesnutt is also referred to as the "human jukebox").
At the age of 16 he joined his father's band. A little later he left school to become a professional musician. For the next ten years he made his living performing on the local music scene. He found a permanent commitment at a club in Beaumont. Like his father before, he played a few singles for smaller labels, including Too Cold At Home .
Career
By Too Cold At Home one was in Nashville attention to Mark Chesnutt. The single was re-released in 1990 on the renowned MCA label and reached number three on the country charts. The album of the same name, produced by Mark Wright , went platinum . A year later he had his first number 1 hit with Brother Jukebox . Two more single releases made it into the top 10. To ensure his success, he gave more than 300 concerts with his New South Band in 1991. Tragically, his father and patron died the same year he made his breakthrough.
His second album Longnecks And Short Stories was released in 1992. Several singles made it into the top 10, Old Flames Have New Names and I'll Think Of Something reached number one. In 1993 he received the CMA Horizon Award for Most Promising Young Musician. His album Almost Goodbye sold over a million copies and went platinum. Mark Chesnutt was considered a singer with a pure country feeling during these years. His unadulterated honky tonk with songs full of pain and self-pity earned him the recognition of the scene and the audience alike.
Until the end of the decade, he kept getting high chart placements, even if not every song was a success. Chesnutt was often overshadowed by superstars Garth Brooks , Clint Black and Alan Jackson , but managed to garner a loyal fan base.
With a cover version of the Aerosmith world hit I Don't Want to Miss a Thing , Chesnutt reached number one in the country and even number 18 of the pop charts in early 1999, but this mainstream-oriented recording caused long-term damage to his career . He himself later said that he only recorded the cover under pressure from his record company and that he downright hated it. Many fans turned away from him and big names in the genre like George Jones criticized him for the cover. After this undoubtedly commercial high point, sales of his CDs dropped dramatically and his singles no longer reached the top of the charts. He was last placed in 2009.
Chesnutt changed record labels a few times, but could no longer build on past successes. Since 2012 he has been releasing albums on his own label "Nada Dinero".
