Mark Carl These (born September 16, 1957 in Buffalo , † December 9, 2008 in Conroe ) was an American chess player .
This won in 1976 in Groningen , the World Youth Championship . For this success, FIDE awarded him the title of International Master . In the next few years he achieved two grandmaster norms at international tournaments , but he did not manage the third norm necessary to get the title awarded. He won the Louisiana State Championship in 1986, 1987 and 1988. Since the mid-1990s, he only took part in tournaments in Texas, where he also worked as a chess coach. His last Elo rating was 2409, in January 1979 he reached his highest rating of 2460.
This was a graduate of the University of Tennessee and a chemical engineer by profession. He was married and had three daughters.
