Mark Harris Getty (born July 9, 1960 in Rome ) is a British businessman with an Irish passport. He is chairman of Getty Investments LLC and co-founder, namesake and was president of the stock photo agency Getty Images until October 2015 . Until 2016 he was a direct competitor of the multibillionaire Bill Gates , whose photo agency Corbis , sold to the Visual China Group in 2016 , took second place on the international market. He has also been Chairman of the National Gallery in London since 2008 .

Career

Mark Getty, grandson of oil billionaire Paul Getty , founded Getty Investments LLC in 1995 with Jonathan Klein, based in Reno , Nevada , USA . Both discovered a gap in the stock photography market and pursued the goal of an international picture agency. They bought collections of photos beforehand, employed photographers and are now the world's largest supplier of individual photos and videos. Right from the start, Getty attached great importance to the quality, timeliness and aesthetics of the images it offered. For example, he did not tolerate pornography in his database from the start, even though it would have achieved a high market value.

Today, Getty Images' images are an integral part of the production of billboards, annual reports, books, brochures, magazines, newspapers and websites. Mark Getty was married to Domitilla Harding from 1982 to 2011 and has three sons. Getty lives in Wormsley Park , Buckinghamshire .
