Mark Gibson (conductor)

Mark Gibson (born July 13, 1956 ) is an American conductor and professor at the College-Conservatory of Music Cincinnati .

Life

Gibson studied piano and conducting at the New England Conservatory of Music and at the University of Michigan with Gustav Meier and Leonard Bernstein . His first engagements took him as chief conductor of the Alabama Symphony Orchestra and as music director of the New York City Opera . He was Kapellmeister of the Gran Teatre del Liceu , Barcelona and Deputy Artistic Director of the Opera House and Music Festival in Lucca .

As a guest conductor he worked at the opera houses in New York , Dallas , Seoul and Cleveland , with the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra in China, the Bochumer Philharmoniker, Minnesota Opera, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra , Jacksonville Symphony, Rochester Philharmonic, Opera Pacific , New Orleans Opera , Chautauqua Opera, Spoleto USA, Gloria Opera Company, Seoul, Ópera de Valencia and Ópera de Málaga .

In 1998 he was appointed professor of conducting at the College-Conservatory of Music Cincinnati.

As a visiting professor, he taught at the University of Music and Theater in Munich and at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing . Graduates of his class have influential positions in international musical life and win all of the world's relevant conducting competitions, such as Xian Zhang , deputy chief conductor of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and Martin Wettges , choir director of the Norwegian National Opera.

The textbook he co-authored The modern conductor is one of the standard works in conducting training.
