Martin Wettges

Martin Wettges (born May 6, 1983 in Regensburg ) is a German conductor , choir director , cultural manager , pianist and musicologist . He has been the full-time choir director of the Norwegian National Opera in Oslo since 2018 .

Life

Martin Wettges studied conducting at the College-Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati (class from Mark Gibson ), at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna (class from Uroš Lajovic ) and at the University of Music and Theater Munich ( master class diploma in the class of Bruno Weil ) as well as musicology, philosophy and music education at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich .

He has been music director of the Mauritius Opera since 2009 and is also an honorary member of the board of the Friends of the Mauritius Opera, which he co-founded in 2013 . V. for the revival and further development of classical music life in the Indian Ocean .

In the music theater he took over the musical direction of new productions at the Munich State Theater on Gärtnerplatz ( Britten : Noye's Fludde ), at the Karlstad Opera in Sweden ( Rigoletto ), at the Coburg State Theater ( Les pêcheurs de perles ), at the Bavarian Theater Academy August Everding ( La Traviata) ), at the Festival of Young Artists Bayreuth ( Wang Ai Qun : The Dream of the Red Chamber , premiere) and with the Opera School and the Institute for Historical Performance Practice of the University of Music and Theater Munich ( Alcina ) .

Further engagements as a guest conductor led him to the opera houses of Eisenach ( Countess Mariza ), Leipzig ( I l turco in Italia ), Lima and La Réunion ( La Traviata ), as well as assistant conductor to the Staatsoper Unter den Linden Berlin and the Munich Biennale für neue Musical theater.

In 2013, at the opening of the Munich Opera Festival , he conducted Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf with Education Minister Dr. Wolfgang Heubisch as speaker.

In 2015, at the invitation of the Goethe-Institut, he made a guest appearance with musicians from the orchestra of the Deutsche Oper Berlin at the ClassikArt Festival in Antananarivo , Madagascar , where he conducted a performance of Haydn's Creation together with local choirs and soloists . In 2018 he conducted the Frankfurt refugee orchestra "Bridges" at the invitation of the German government in front of Chancellor Merkel as part of the commemoration day for flight and displacement in Berlin .

From 2013 to 2016 he was employed as choir director at Opera North in Leeds . In 2016 he switched to the Meiningen State Theater as choir director with a conducting obligation , where he conducted opera performances as well as symphony concerts with the Meiningen court orchestra . Since 2018 he has been employed in the same position at the Norwegian National Opera in Oslo .

As the artistic director of the 14th edition of the LGBTI * choir festival Various Voices , he conducted Carl Orff's Carmina Burana on Munich's Odeonsplatz in 2018 with over 3000 participants.

Wettges lives in Oslo and Berlin .

Educational activity

Between 2005 and 2007 he was the conductor of the Young Orchestra of the Munich Academic Choral Society . From 2008 to 2013 Martin Wettges worked at the University of Music and Theater Munich as a lecturer for orchestral conducting of school music and from 2012 to 2013 as a lecturer at the Institute for Musicology at LMU Munich. He directed the symphony orchestra of the German National Academic Foundation, which he co-founded, between 2006 and 2013. As a guest lecturer, he taught at the College-Conservatory of Music Cincinnati , at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester , at the Conservatoire Frédéric Mitterand Mauritius, at the Bavarian Theater Academy August Everding , at the Conservatoire de la Région Réunion , as well as for the Bavarian Singing Academy of the German Music Council .

Since its inception in 2011, he has been the artistic director of the Music Academy of the German National Academic Foundation, which he co-founded .

Wettges received scholarships from the German National Academic Foundation , the Richard Wagner Association , the Mark Lothar Foundation and the University of Cincinnati .
