Gustav Meier

Gustav Meier (born August 13, 1929 in Wettingen ; † May 26, 2016 ) was a Swiss conductor and music teacher .

Life

Meier studied at the Zurich Conservatory and at the Accademia Chigiana Siena . 1957-58 he attended the master classes for conductors in Tanglewood together with Claudio Abbado , Zubin Mehta and David Zinman . He began his career as a conductor at the Lucerne Opera and then conducted at the Vienna Chamber Opera and the Zurich Opera.

From 1960 to 1973 he was a music professor at Yale University . He then taught at the Eastman School of Music until 1976 . From 1980 to 1996 he led the conducting seminars in Tanglewood. In 1988 he received the Luise Vosgerchian Teaching Award from Harvard University . His students include a. Marin Alsop , Alexander Frey , Antonio Pappano , Bobby McFerrin , Yakov Kreizberg , Rico Saccani , Carl St. Clair , Bundit Ungrangsee , Mark Gibson , Jun Märkl and Benjamin Loeb .

Meier has conducted the Greater Lansing Symphony Orchestra in Michigan and the Greater Bridgeport Symphony Orchestra in Connecticut. He has also appeared as a guest conductor in various orchestras in the USA, Latin America and Europe. He directed the world premieres of compositions by Robert Carl , Elliott Carter , Kurt Weills , Hugo Weisgalls , James Mulcro Drews and Thomas Fays . In 1995 he received the Ditson Conductor's Award from Columbia University for his contributions to American music. In 2009 his book The Score, the Orchestra, and the Conductor was published .
