Mark Aronowitsch Neumark (also Naimark , Russian Марк Аронович Наймарк , scientific transliteration Mark Aronovič Najmark ; born December 5, 1909 in Odessa , † December 30, 1978 in Moscow ) was a Soviet mathematician who dealt with functional analysis and representation theory.

Life

Neumark spent the first years of his life in Odessa. He began studying there in 1929 and graduated in 1933. Then he also worked in Odessa at MG Kerin , where he submitted a thesis on normal operators on Hilbert spaces in 1936 .

From 1938 to 1941 Neumark worked at the Steklow Institute for Mathematics of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR and then worked at the Seismological Institute of the USSR , which was relocated to Tashkent from 1941 to 1943 .

In 1954 Neumark became a professor at the Physikalisch-Technische Institut in Moscow and held a professorship at the Steklow Institute for Mathematics from 1962 until the end of his life.

He published about 130 articles and five monographs. After Neumark among others are Gelfand-Naimark theorem and the Gelfand-Neumark-Segal construction named. He also dealt with infinitely dimensional representations of Lie groups (even of non-compact ones such as the Lorentz group, which is important in physics ) following Eugene Wigner .

In 1970 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Nice ( Some problems and results in representation theory of complex semi-simple Lie groups ).
