Mark Villiger

Mark Villiger (born May 17, 1950 in Louis Trichardt , South Africa ; legal resident in Hochdorf LU ) is a Swiss lawyer . He was a judge at the European Court of Human Rights .

Life and professional history

After schools in Mozambique , South Africa and Austria , Villiger studied law at the University of Zurich and received his doctorate in 1978 under Hans Ulrich Walder-Richli . In 1985 the University of Zurich awarded him the Venia legendi for international law and European law. Seven years later she promoted him to titular professor .

From 1983 to 1999 he worked as a legal assistant at the European Commission for Human Rights. From 1991 to 2002 he was Head of Department at the European Court of Human Rights and in 1997 became First Chancellor of the Human Rights Chamber in Sarajevo . He was Deputy Section Chancellor of the Human Rights Court from 2002 to 2006 when the Parliamentary Assembly elected him to succeed Lucius Caflisch , who had reached the age limit for judicial office in Strasbourg at the age of 70 , as the new judge at the European Court of Human Rights for Liechtenstein . His term began on September 1, 2006 and ended on August 31, 2016.
