Mark Weil ( Russian Марк Яковлевич Вайль , transliteration Mark Jakovlevič Vajl ' , Uzbek Mark Vayl ; born January 25, 1952 in Tashkent ; † September 7, 2007 ibid) was a Soviet , later Uzbek theater director and theater director. He was the most famous theater maker in Central Asia worldwide.

Life

Mark Weil was born into the family of a military man. His mother was a graduate of the Kiev Theater School . He graduated from the directing department of the theater school in Tashkent. Weil was of Ukrainian-Jewish descent. From 1972 to 1975 he worked under the well-known directors Georgi Towstonogow in Leningrad and Yuri Lyubimow in Moscow. In 1976 he founded the Ilkhom Theater in Tashkent, the first independent theater in the Soviet Union without state subsidies and censorship. Initially run on a voluntary basis, the ensemble quickly became known for its avant-garde staging of provocative pieces. While the theater in Tashkent was able to stage things that were critical of the regime relatively undisturbed, a guest performance in Moscow and Leningrad in 1982 meant that recommendations by the KGB threatened the existence of the theater. However, the emerging perestroika prevented a state ban. Weil's productions repeatedly revolved around the relationship of the Islamic world to homosexuality , which is officially banned in Uzbekistan.

Many of Weil's productions have been invited to international festivals, including the Ruhr Festival in Recklinghausen. Also in Bulgaria, Denmark, France, Great Britain, Israel, Japan, Yugoslavia, Norway, Austria, Russia, the Czech Republic and again and again in the USA, productions by Weil and the Ilchom Theater could be seen.

In 1994 he founded an acting school under the roof of the Ilchom Theater. He also held seminars and lectures at several universities in the USA.

On the night of September 7, 2007, shortly before midnight, Weil was stabbed by two men in front of his apartment in Tashkent. He died in hospital on the morning of September 7th as a result of the injuries. The perpetrators have not yet been caught. The motive is unknown.
