Margraviate of Saluzzo

The Margraviate of Saluzzo with the capital Saluzzo was in Piedmont . Saluzzo was created in 1142 by agreement between France and Savoy and was raised to margraviate in 1175 by Emperor Frederick I. After the count's family, the dynasty Del Vasto, a line of the Aleramides , died out, the area fell to France in 1548, which gave it to Piedmont (Savoy) on January 17, 1601 in exchange for Bresse , then the westernmost part of the Savoy.

The margraviate was part of what is now the Piedmontese provinces of Cuneo and Turin . In the course of history parts of what is now France also belonged to the sovereign territory, but the heartland lay between the rivers Stura and Po and the Alps .
