Career

Maatela first attracted international attention at the Four Hills Tournament in 1959/60 , after having traveled to the Nordic World Ski Championships as a substitute in the previous year . After he achieved a good place in the opening competition on the Schattenbergschanze in Oberstdorf in 16th place, he finished eighth on the Olympic hill in Garmisch-Partenkirchen . After a tenth place in Innsbruck , he finished the tour with a 27th place on the Paul-Ausserleitner-Schanze in Bischofshofen . In the overall ranking he reached 13th place.

In 1960 Maatela won the ski flying weeks in Vikersund . A year later he finished seventh in ski flying in Oberstdorf , making the longest jump for a Finn at that time with 136 meters.

For the Nordic World Ski Championships in Zakopane in 1962 , Maatela narrowly missed the qualification.

Maatela's brother Martti Maatela was successful as a Nordic combined athlete.
