Marko Sosič (born December 22, 1958 in Trieste , Italy ; † February 3, 2021 there ) was a Slovenian-speaking Italian writer and director .

life and work

Sosič was born in Trieste in 1958, where he grew up and went to school. In 1984 he completed his studies in directing at the Academy of Theater and Film Arts in Zagreb . He has worked as a theater director in Ljubljana , Nova Gorica , Trieste and Rome , among others . Sosič was the author and director of numerous radio plays that were published on the Slovenian radio in Trieste, but also worked for television, for example as a director for documentaries. From 1990 to 1994 he was artistic director of the Slovensko Narodno Gledališče(Slovenian National Theater) in Nova Gorica, from 1999 to 2006 director and artistic director of the Slovensko stalno gledališče (Permanent Slovenian Theater) in Trieste. In 2007 he took over the artistic direction again for two years. In 2004 and 2005 he was a curator at the Borštnikovo srečanje theater festival in Maribor .

Sosič became known as an author of novels and short stories. His works are often set in and around Trieste, whose intellectual and political climate they deal with, in particular the fate of the Slovene minority and the neo-fascism of post-war Italian society. His literary characters are often eccentric and outsiders, as for example in the novel Balerina, Balerina (ballerina, ballerina), the main character of which is a fifteen-year-old girl who suffers from a developmental disorder and therefore behaves unusual for her age. For this novel he received the Triester Preis Vstajenje in 1997 and was nominated for the Kresnik Prize for the best Slovenian novel of the year, on whose shortlist he found himself three more times: 2006 for Tito, amor mijo (German Tito, amor mijo , 2016), 2013 for Ki od daleč prihajaš v mojo bližino (You come near me from afar) and 2015 for Kratki roman o ljubezni in snegu (short novel about love and snow).

His novel Tito, amor mijo was published in German in 2016 under the same title by Drava Verlag . Individual books have also been translated into French, Serbian, Italian and English. Sosič died in Trieste in February 2021 at the age of 62.
