Markoosie Patsauq ( ᒫᑯᓯ ᐸᑦᓴᐅᖅ Maakusi Patsa.uq , self-designation with the first name Markoosie , * 1941 in Inukjuaq , Québec ; † 2020 ) was an Inuit- Canadian writer . John Amagoalik is his younger brother.

Life

Markoosie attended primary school in Inukjuaq / Port Harrison. He was one of the families who were resettled by the Canadian government in the high Arctic ( Resolute Bay ) during the Cold War in 1953 . He had tuberculosis before he left , which is why he was admitted to The Pas Hospital in Manitoba for two years in 1954 . Here he received lessons in English, learned some Cree from fellow patients and read comics. In 1961 he graduated from Sir John Franklin High School in Yellowknife ( Northwest Territories ) and in 1967 his pilot's license (training with the aviator Welland Phipps). In 1971 Jean Chrétien (then Minister for Native American Affairs ) appointed him to the board of directors of Panarctic Oils, Ltd. In 1975, Markoosie returned to Inukjuaq, where he worked in public administration from 1978 (Inukjuak Municipal Council, Kativiq Regional Government ).

Markoosie became known through his story Harpoon of the hunter , which is considered to be the first written Inuit story. The focus is on 16-year-old Kamik, who goes out with the hunters of his settlement to hunt down a presumably rabid polar bear. Kamik's father is killed and Kamik is the only one of the group to survive. When the remaining inhabitants of the settlement move to another settlement, his mother and his future bride and father-in-law drown, whereupon he takes his own life. Kamik's perspective forms the main narrative, with the perspective of Kamik's mother, another resident and the polar bear interwoven.

The work was first published in 1969/70 in Inuktitut in reduced syllabary (without end-of-syllable consonants and length signs ) under the title ᐅᒪᔪᓯᐅᑎ ᐅᓇᑐᐃᓇᒧᑦ (means ᐆᒪᔪᕐᓯᐅᑎ ᐅᓈᑐᐃᓐᓇᒧᑦ Uumajursiuti unaatuinnamut , German `` hunter with only one harpoon '' ), divided into three issues of the magazine ᐃᓄᑎᑐᑦ Inuttituut . In 1970 the author himself made a translation into English as a book with the title Harpoon of the hunter .
