The market square is the central square in Jüterbog . The city ​​hall is located here . 24 houses and a monument are listed in the street. A detailed list of the listed houses can be found in the list of architectural monuments in Jüterbog .

location

The market is almost in a north-south direction in the middle of the old town. The streets that lead to the market, starting at the northwest corner, are: Mönchenstrasse , Wüsthof, Zinnaer Strasse on the northeast corner , Nikolaikirchstrasse on the eastern side, Pferdestrasse on the southeastern side and Große Strasse on the southeastern corner . The market is divided by Töpfergasse, which runs south of the town hall. This southern part of the market is built on. The numbering runs clockwise around the market from the corner of Mönchenstrasse / Wursthof. The market is about 50 meters wide (east-west) and about 90 meters long. The north-south streets are one-way towards the north.

Karnip Alley is on the western side of the town hall. The origin of the name is unclear. The houses here were always included in the market.

history

The square probably got its current size in the 13th century. Weekly markets have been held on the market since 1285. The court of the city of Jüterbog was also located on the market. Punishments took place on the east side of the market, and executions took place in the middle of the square. The largest building in the market, first mentioned in 1285, is the town hall .

In 1880 a memorial for the wars of 1864, 1866 and 1870/1871 was erected on the square. In 1936 the memorial was placed in the Zinna suburb, in 1945 it was destroyed. In 1911 the breakthrough to the former dead end Wüsthof was made, you could now get to the market directly from Schillerstraße . In 1936 the square was rebuilt and the four linden trees in front of the court arbor were felled. The row of linden trees on the east and west side were laid out.

From 1945 to 1991 the market was called Platz der Jugend . From 1991 to 1992 the market was re-paved.

Houses

There are 25 houses and a monument on the market that are under monument protection. The most important monuments in detail:

  • The house at Markt 2 was the inn Zum Löwen , the restaurant closed after the Second World War . The house on the corner of Wüsthof was built in 1815, rebuilt in 1878 and 1893. It is well preserved and is an example of upscale housing construction in the early 20th century.
  • The house at Markt 5 was built at the beginning of the 18th century. The neighboring house is on Zinnaer Strasse . It is a two-story half-timbered house with a half-hipped roof. Here, and in the house at Zinnaer Strasse 17, was the inn to the Seven Electors . Philipp Hainhofer described the restaurant in 1617 as one of the best in Germany. The house burned down in the Thirty Years War , the basement from that time is still there.
  • The current house at Markt 6 was built in 1956/1957 in the style of the surrounding houses. Before that, there was the Zur süßen Ecke inn , which burned down in 1945. There used to be Wallenstein house, during the Thirty Years' War in the years 1626 and 1627 lived here Wallenstein .
  • The house at Markt 7/8 was built in 1897 as an ear pharmacy. The house is a brick building with stucco structure. Today there is a café in the right part.
  • The house at Markt 10 was probably built around 1839. It is on the corner of Mittelstrasse opposite the town hall. The house was renovated in 1997, since then it has included the market passages. The cellar system dates from the 16th century.
  • The two-story house at Markt 11 was built around 1770. From 1895 to around 1955 there was a restaurant in the house. There is a cellar under the house, probably from the 16th or 17th century.
  • The house at Markt 15/16 was built by the Kreissparkasse in 1913/1914. The architects were Ernst Paulus and Olaf Lilloe. The house is a three-story house with an L-shaped floor plan on the corner of Große Straße, the longer side is on the market.
  • The house at Marktstraße 17 is the Blumberg bakery. It was built south of the town hall in the 18th century. The eaves side is on Große Straße, until 1999 the address was Große Straße 53.
  • The house with the address Markt 21 is the town hall. The construction of the town hall started in 1499 as a department store, it was renovated in 1994. At the town hall there is a memorial plaque for citizens of Jüterbog who were murdered in concentration camps or extermination camps . The memorial plaque is listed separately in the list of monuments.
  • Haus Markt 34 was an inn that had existed here since around 1500. The new building took place in 1760. The house is two-story, today the half-timbering is visible. A large medieval cellar is part of the house.
  • The house at Markt 36 is on the corner of Mönchenstrasse and was built in 1837. In 1914 the house was rebuilt and shop windows were installed. Under the house there is a well-preserved cellar from the Middle Ages.
