Marktfrühschoppen
The Marktfrühschoppen in Marburg was an annual event on the first Sunday in July on the Marburg market square, which was primarily supported by student associations . It was described by the organizers as the "shortest folk festival in Germany".
The Marktfrühschoppen last took place in 2014, after the city administration had tried to prevent the event in previous years due to the participation of some fraternities classified as right-wing extremists . The last announced early market pint in 2015 was canceled by the sponsoring association, and the sponsoring association finally disbanded in 2017.
history
Today's event goes back to the morning pint of the Marburg students in the upper town, which has been common since 1903.
From 1951 to 1998 the upper township was the organizer of the Marktfrühschoppens in its current form. After a transition phase, a market early pint association made up of individuals and district communities has been the organizer since 2000.
From the 1990s on there were regular protests by left-wing groups against the Marktfrühschoppen.
In 2012, the city council of Marburg announced for the first time that it would no longer make the market square available for early-morning pint, whereupon Mayor Egon Vaupel refused the event the necessary approval. A corresponding ban for 2013 was legally revoked.
Protests
In recent years, left-wing groups, the DGB secretary and the “Alliance against Right” have organized counter-events at a similar time in which they criticize the current and historical student union system . These groups particularly criticize the participation of members of the German Burschenschaft (DB), in which three of the more than 30 Marburg connections are organized. According to the critics, the fraternities Rheinfranken , Normannia Leipzig and Germania belong to the right- wing extremist wing of the DB, since according to the opposing parties they regularly hold events with speakers from the right-wing spectrum . The Oberhessische Presse also spoke in its coverage of the Marktfrühschoppen 2007 of a controversial party because of the participation of right-wing fraternities.
In previous years, there were physical attacks on the fraternity students, dignitaries, business people, citizens of the boroughs and demonstrators gathered there during the events. In 2005 two fraternity students and two " old men " are said to have been beaten with baseball bats in the run-up to the market early pint . On the evening of July 3, 1999, an "Alter Herren" event, which took place as part of the Marktfrühschoppens, was attacked and the window panes of the Marburg "Sorat Hotel" were destroyed. This led to a police operation in which the use of firearms by the police against the attackers was imminent, but could ultimately be averted. According to the organizer, there were also four attacks on fraternity members in 2007. But opponents of the market preschool also claim to have been victims of violence by festival visitors. The high point was in 2002, when women from the opposing camp were reportedly beaten by corporates.
Therefore, since the end of the 1990s, an ever-increasing police presence in the upper town area has been part of the market morning pint.
In connection with the call to practice peaceful tolerance , the organizers turned against “radicals from the right and left”. However, there were still protests from left and radical left groups, who complained, among other things, of a lack of distancing from the DB fraternities criticized.
The judiciary in Marburg was biased and tough in criminal proceedings against demonstrators in 2003, according to opponents of the market early pint. In addition, the role of the judiciary and in particular that of the then senior public prosecutor Wölk, a co-organizer of some early-morning drinks, is criticized. He and the judiciary in general would try to criminalize the opponents of the market early pint.
Ban 2012 and 2013
The announcement by groups from the anti-fascist spectrum that they wanted to demonstrate again against the Marktfrühschoppen in 2012 led the City of Marburg to recommend that the festival be canceled. The cancellation of the festival due to safety concerns was discussed, but ultimately the majority of the Marktfrühschoppenverein spoke out in favor of hosting the festival this year as well. In 2012, Lord Mayor Egon Vaupel did not grant the Marktfrühschoppenverein any special permission to use the marketplace, which would have been necessary to hold the festival. He justified this with different views in the district communities and the market early pint club acting as the organizer. There was a "deep break in the citizenship" and he considered a suspension of the festival "out of consideration for the citizens and out of respect for the tolerant mentality in our city" to be necessary. He explained: “The dominance of the Burschenschaften Rheinfranken, Germania and Normannia Leipzig, which has been observed for some years , their mentality and the current events are reason enough for the working group of the district communities and the magistrate to pause and a new, real festival for the urban society to plan."
In 2013 the magistrate decided not to allow the festival to take place in 2013 either. Despite this decision, Vaupel held out the prospect of allowing the festival to take place if the Marktfrühschoppenverein, as the operator of the Marktfrühschoppenverein, would distance itself from the three fraternities belonging to the German fraternity. After the Marktfrühschoppen operators had distanced themselves from "the machinations of the German fraternity" and from xenophobia and right-wing extremist ideas, Vaupel promised approval of the Marktfrühschoppen after a final legal examination. This legal examination was carried out by the regional council of Giessen. It came to the conclusion that the decision of the magistrate was binding. As a result, Vaupel forbade the Marktfrühschoppenverein to hold the Marktfrühschoppenverein 2013. This prohibition was declared null and void by the Administrative Court of Giessen ; The Hessian Administrative Court ultimately rejected a complaint against this judgment .
Political distancing
Due to the public discussions, the operators of the Marktfrühschoppen distanced themselves clearly from right-wing fraternities for the first time in July 2014 and declared that they "forbid the representative participation of associations and groups that do not clearly distance themselves from the discriminatory positions in the umbrella organization of the German fraternity." want to ensure "that fraternities on the far right edge no longer use the event as a stage."
