The house at Marktstrasse 1 is a listed building in Wernigerode , Harz district , in Saxony-Anhalt .

Marktstrasse 1 is located in the southern part of Wernigerode's city center, not far from the market square at the beginning of Marktstrasse .

Architecture and history

It is a building complex from the 15th to 19th centuries, which is grouped around an open courtyard. In the past there was also a house garden.

The main building directly on Marktstrasse was rebuilt between 1830 and 1840 as a residential and commercial building. It replaced a previous building from 1530, which was demolished and of which only a cellar with a water-bearing cistern has survived. In 1899 there was a further change in the substance and in 1906 the extension of the residential building was demolished and rebuilt as a farm building. The buildings on the farm were still used as stables, wash houses and coffee distilleries as well as storage facilities around 1900. At that time, the building complex was owned by the general practitioner Dr. med. Emil Kruska, after whom the Kruskastraße in Wernigerode is named today.

In the courtyard are u. a. the so-called Kemenate and the Remise bordering on Unterengengasse, in which the Wernigerode Art and Culture Association occasionally holds events. Various artisans have their domicile in the courtyard and events and exhibitions are also held in the gallery on the first floor connected to the coach house .

The house is listed in the local monument register under registration number 094 02499.
