Markus Egg (historian)

Markus Egg (born June 24, 1954 in Schwaz ) is an Austrian prehistorian .

Life

Markus Egg, Erich Egg's son , studied at the Institute for Prehistory and Protohistory at the University of Innsbruck , where he received his doctorate in 1977. From 1978 to the end of October 2019 he worked at the Roman-Germanic Central Museum in Mainz . In 2003 he was appointed director of the prehistory department and manager of the restoration workshops. In 1987 he completed his habilitation at the University of Innsbruck, where he was also awarded the title of associate professor in 1997 . Egg retired on November 1, 2019.

His research focuses on the cultures of the older Iron Age north and south of the Alps and the interaction between these two areas. The question of the genesis of elites in this era is a particular focus. He also works on the prehistory of Tyrol.

Egg was deputy spokesman for the Earth System Science Research Center at the University of Mainz , which was founded in 2008.
