Earth System Science Research Center

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Earth System Science Research Center at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz was founded in 2008 and bundles the research interests of the university with those of the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry with the departments of Biogeochemistry , Geochemistry , Atmospheric Chemistry and Particle Chemistry, the Roman-Germanic Central Museum Mainz and the Mainz University of Applied Sciences with the Institute for Spatial Information and Measurement Technology. This cooperation association emerged from the Cluster of Excellence "Geocycles - Time and Space in Earth Sciences" established in July 2005 by the State of Rhineland-Palatinate as part of the state competition "Knowledge Creates Future" .

Joint projects are: Riftlink , the ELSA core archive (archive for sediment cores with thin-section specimens from Eifelmaaren ) and DEKLIM (German climate research program) funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research .

The spokesman for the interdisciplinary research center is currently (2009) Stephen Francis Foley from the Institute for Geosciences at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, Petrology Department , his deputy the prehistoric archaeologist Markus Egg , director of the Prehistory Department of the Roman-Germanic Central Museum Mainz.

The four main themes of the interdisciplinary research network are:

  • Modern climate
  • Culture and society
  • Solid Earth Processes

such as

The interdisciplinary research interests focus on earth processes that affect the geosphere , atmosphere and biosphere and contribute to climate change and the closely related environmental changes caused by human intervention. In the research network, traditional natural scientists work together with humanities and cultural scientists to solve highly complex questions . Different disciplines such as archeology , anthropology , biology , sociology and molecular biology are integrated with the classic natural science disciplines of the earth sciences such as geology , geography , meteorology , mineralogy and paleontology . The research center has set itself the goal of “improving the understanding of earth processes and their interactions with cultures both in science and in society and to make a contribution to the explanation of these complexly interwoven issues ... Long-term goals are the consolidation of instruments in one 'Central Science Laboratory' as well as the implementation of an 'Earth System Campus' with graduate scholarships, junior professorships, an international summer school and an international conference 'Earth System Processes' in order to bring one of the world's leading centers for Earth system sciences together ", so the research center in its self-portrayal.

In the future, the opening of new research directions are also planned, especially in the areas of paleoclimate , biodiversity and numerical modeling .

The research center regularly conducts its own series of lectures in the affiliated research institutes.
