Markus Reiter (politician)

Markus Reiter (born June 8, 1971 in Gmunden ) is an Austrian politician , co-founder of the social organization nineerhaus and social economist. Since November 30, 2017, he has succeeded Thomas Blimlinger as district chairman of Vienna's 7th district of Neubau .

Life

In 1990 he began studying social economy at the University of Linz , during which he also completed a year at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen . In 1996 he moved to Vienna, to be more precise in a Neubauer shared apartment. Markus Reiter is married and has three children.

Politics and civil society

Born in Gmunden, Markus Reiter started his political career in Upper Austria and has been active in the Greens since 1989 . During his studies, Markus Reiter was involved in social and socio-political issues and advocated ecological initiatives. Alongside his studies, in 1994 he worked at the Kunstuni Linz on the exhibition project “Netz Europa” by Helmuth Gsöllpointner . From 1991 to 1992 he was deputy chairman of the ÖH at the University of Linz and in 1993 co-founder of SOS Mitmensch Upper Austria. He also worked in the parliamentary club of the Greens on the model of the Greens basic security. In winter 1998 Reiter was part of a citizens' initiative that dealt with the situation of homeless people at Vienna's Franz-Josephs-Bahnhof . In September 1999 the association " nineerhaus " emerged, of which Reiter became chairman and managing director. In 2001 the first residential building opened by the association. Two more houses followed, mobile support from Housing First and extensive medical care. Reiter campaigned for support, social rights and the strengthening of personal responsibility throughout Vienna's homeless aid and campaigned for social rights for homeless EU citizens. Today, according to its own statements, the nineerhaus cares for around 4,500 homeless people every year.

Markus Reiter has been a district councilor and chairman of the social commission in Vienna's seventh district since 2011.

In autumn 2017, Reiter took over the office of district chairman from Thomas Blimlinger.
