The ruins of the Markuskapelle are in the Spessart , southeast of Schollbrunn in the Main-Spessart district in Bavaria .

The chapel ruin is located at the Fechermühle , at the entrance to the Mühlental , on the right side of the slope of the Haslochbach . West is located in Kropfbachtal the Carthusian Grunau . State road 2316 leads past the Markus chapel from Schollbrunn to Hasloch . The municipal boundary to Hasloch runs directly on the south walls.

history

The Markuskapelle was first mentioned in 1216. They were built in honor of Saints Mary , Laurentius and Nicholas . From 1297 the chapel is documented as a place of pilgrimage . The Markuskapelle was so destroyed in the Peasants' War around 1525 that it fell apart in the following time. The miraculous image, a Madonna and Child from around 1480, still adorns the side altar of the Faulbach parish church today . The chapel ruin then served as a cattle shed for a time. In the 19th century, the Counts of Wertheim-Löwenstein-Rosenberg were able to prevent the ruins from falling victim to stone robbery or as building material for road construction.
