Ornithogalum sardienii is a plant of the genus ornithogalum in the family of asparagaceae (Asparagaceae). Thespecific epithet sardienii honors Tommy Sardien (* 1932), who was the curator for South African succulents at the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden for a long time.

description

Ornithogalum sardienii is dwarfish and grows with single or group-forming, above-ground, spherical bulbs with a length of 8 to 20 millimeters and a diameter of 5 to 18 millimeters. The gray-white, succulent onion scales are slightly translucent. The fibrous roots are round. The evergreen, rising to upright spreading 20 to 50 leaves form a dense basal rosette . Their linear-lanceolate, green leaf blades are 15 to 25 millimeters long and 1 millimeter wide at the base. There are up to six rows of white, translucent, protruding eyelashes on it. The leaf blade is keeled and triangular in cross section. The upper side of the leaf is flat, the leaf edge ciliate. The underside of the leaf is convex in its lower part. The tip of the leaf has a yellowish green tip.

The one to five upright, paniculate, up to 30-flowered inflorescences reach a length of 15 to 24 centimeters. The upward-pointing flowers reach a diameter of about 12 millimeters. The lower bracts are up to 3.5 millimeters long. The upper ones are smaller. The flowers are on peduncles up to 2 centimeters long . The inflorescence is star-shaped. Their white, blunt tepals are 5 to 6 millimeters long. The outer tepals are 2 millimeters wide, the inner 1.5 millimeters. The stamens are 3 to 4 millimeters long. The stamens are thread-like. The two millimeter long ovary is obovate ellipsoid to spherical and sechsrinnig. There are light green bumps along its central part. The upright, six-grooved stylus is 2 millimeters long.

The egg-shaped, 3.5 millimeter long fruits contain pear-shaped, polygonal seeds with a length of 0.5 millimeters.

Systematics and distribution

Ornithogalum sardienii is widespread in the South African province of Western Cape in the Succulent Karoo .

The first description by Ernst Jacobus van Jaarsveld was published in 1994.

A nomenclature synonym is Nicipe sardienii (van Jaarsv.) Mart.-Azorín, MBCrespo & Juan (2011).
