Marlin Henderson Skiles (born December 17, 1906 in Harrisburg , Pennsylvania , † May 1, 1981 in San Diego , California ) was an American pianist , arranger and film composer .

Life

Marlin Skiles first attended Technical High School and then the Froehlich School of Music in their native Harrisburg . He later studied with composer Ernst Toch in Los Angeles . At the age of 17 he worked as a pianist for dance orchestras, later also as musical director, pianist and arranger for Paul Whiteman and Irving Aaronson . In 1932 he went to Hollywood , where from 1934 he worked as a composer for various film studios, but also for radio. He composed particularly often for the small production company Republic Pictures. In 1944 he finally got a contract with Columbia Pictures , where he worked mostly with Columbia's musical director Morris Stoloff . For the musical Tonight and Every Night (1945) with Rita Hayworth and Janet Blair , he and Stoloff received a nomination for an Oscar in the category of best film music . He was also involved in Hayworth's greatest success, the film noir Gilda . Mostly, however, Skiles was responsible for smaller productions.

From 1948 he worked again as a freelance composer, whereupon he contributed the accompanying music for several film adaptations of the book series Bomba, the jungle boy in the 1950s . In 1971 he retired from the film business to Poway near San Diego . In 1976 he published a book entitled Music Scoring for TV & Motion Pictures .
