Marlis Hellinger

Marlis Hellinger (born on 19th June 1943 in Pirna ) is a German Anglistin , linguist , university lecturer and author . In 1980, together with Ingrid Guentherodt , Luise F. Pusch and Senta Trömel-Plötz, she published the guidelines for avoiding sexist language use , which initiated a linguistic discussion on gender-equitable language and related research.

Live and act

Hellinger studied German , English and Slavic at the University of Hamburg and graduated in 1968 with the first state examination for teaching at grammar schools. In 1969 she did her doctorate - also at the University of Hamburg - with a thesis on transformational word formation. She then worked as a lecturer for German language and literature in England at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne . After her return to Germany, Hellinger worked as an assistant and later assistant professor at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz .

In 1975 she accepted a position as professor for linguistics and didactics of English in the department of modern foreign languages ​​and literatures at the Philipps University of Marburg . In 1977 she moved to the University of Hanover , where she held a professorship for English linguistics for twenty years. In 1994 she turned down an offer for a professorship for English linguistics at the University of Bayreuth . From 1997 until her retirement in 2007, Hellinger was Professor of English and Linguistics at the Institute for English and American Studies at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main .

Research interests

Hellinger's English research interests are broad and include sociolinguistics , creol studies, language acquisition , multilingualism , contrastive linguistics, and linguistic gender studies.

Honorary positions

Hellinger is a member of the Zonta Club Frankfurt II Rhein-Main and was a board member there: as President from 2008 to 2010 and 2010 to 2012 and as Vice President from 2014 to 2016.
