Legend
The origin of marmelete is not clear and not exactly known. The following legend is told:
Once upon a time there was a crew consisting of the captain and four sailors who sailed across the sea. One night the ship capsized because of a storm. With great difficulty everyone was able to escape together to the coast of Lagos, they were also able to rescue eight goats and a few parts of the ship.
After they had saved themselves, they climbed the surrounding mountains to find a suitable shelter. The place that they thought was the most suitable at the time is now known as Marmelete.
They stayed there for a long time and ate goat milk and fish. Every morning a couple went down the mountain to the sea to catch fish while the others watched the animals. They built temporary accommodation from the remains of the ship.
At some point the men met women from the area and got married. Only the captain could not come to terms with the monotonous life on land. Meanwhile, the original shelter had developed into a village of proper accommodation and a large number of livestock. One day the captain was going to the port of Lagos and by chance met an old captain he knew. He told him about his situation, so that he gave him his position as captain.
Since he could not take his men with him, he said goodbye to them with the following words:
"My friends, I am leaving you and I do not know whether I will return. But in my soul I keep this place and baptize it" Mar e Leite "(sea and milk). The two elements that helped us to survive for many years. The sea where we caught fish and the milk of the goats. " The men accepted and wrote these sentences on a stone.
Over time the name was changed until it developed into the current form "Marmelete".
