History and sights

There was a Bronze Age settlement here, which was repopulated in the 5th century. From 711 the Moors conquered the Iberian Peninsula . They built a fortress here in the 10th century as part of the defense system of Silves . The current place name probably goes back to this time, to the Arabic term al-Faris for "rider". The excavations of the fortifications can be visited.

During the Reconquista , the last areas of the Algarve came to the Kingdom of Portugal in 1249 , and with it Alferce. It remained a parish of the Silves district until the Monchique district was created in 1773 when it was spun off from the Silves district. Since then, Alferce has belonged to the Monchique district.

The parish church Igreja Paroquial de Alferce , also Igreja de São Romão after its patron saint (the Holy Roman of Antioch) , is a listed building. There are also various water and windmills in the community.
