Marmot is on outdoor - apparel specialty and sporting goods company. The name "Marmot" means " marmot " in English .

Marmot was founded in 1973 by two students from the University of California, Santa Cruz, Eric Reynolds and Dave Huntley, who wanted to make their own mountain gear.

Its headquarters are in Rohnert Park , California. Additional offices were opened in Colorado, Canada and Hong Kong. Since the mid-1990s, Marmot's European business has also been gaining in importance, so that in 2002 Marmot Mountain Europe GmbH was founded, which is now based in Hattersheim / Frankfurt.

In 2004, Marmot was taken over by K2 Sports , which in turn was taken over in 2007 by Jarden Corporation . After Jarden was taken over by Newell Rubbermaid in 2016, Marmot was spun off from K2 and K2 Sports was sold to Kohlberg & Company in 2017. Marmot stayed with Newell.
