Marr are an experimental indie rock band from Hamburg with noise rock and progressive rock influences as well as influences from hardcore punk / punk rock . The name of the band is not related to the guitarist of the English indie rock band The Smiths , Johnny Marr , but comes from a Hamburg artist who had put up posters with the words "Marr" made by herself all over town.

history

Andre Frahm and Jan Elbeshausen were already active in numerous hardcore bands before they founded the band Marr together with Dennis Becker and Oliver Koch from the German indie pop / Hamburg school band Tomte .

Although - at least some - of the band hardly have anything to do with punk and hardcore punk anymore, the ideals of the hardcore punk movement, such as an understanding of music that is not geared towards commercial consumption, DIY etc., are still very important to them. Dennis Becker said in an interview with music-scan.de :

"The way we deal with music is certainly influenced by our punk / hardcore activity and the DIY philosophy has good things for itself, but musically I no longer feel connected to punk."

- Dennis Becker : Interview from February 5, 2004 at music-scan.de

Marr publish with the independent label Grand Hotel van Cleef , the label of Thees Uhlmann , band colleague of Becker and Koch at Tomte .

style

By his own admission, the musical influences are also relatively diverse and include hardcore bands like Fugazi , metal bands like Slayer as well as Radiohead and Gunter Gabriel .
