Marsh Marigold Records is an Independent - label from Hamburg , Germany , and was founded in the 1988th

Label history

In 1988 Oliver Goetzl and three friends founded the band Jesterbells , whose sound was based on The Go-Betweens and Felt as well as on bands from the British label Sarah Records . Since no German record company was ready to take on this band despite the guitar pop music scene that was also growing in Germany, Oliver Goetzl founded an indie label himself and called it Marsh-Marigold Records . The 7 "EP Rain Keeps Falling was the label's first release in February 1989. Both the Jesterbells and Marsh-Marigold Records soon aroused the interest of the fanzine scene, which was also emerging in Germany, and the Jesterbells were allowed to support The Wedding Present in May 1989 . After the Jesterbells had released the 7 "EP Just Like Apples On The Tree in July 1989 , the band broke up in the summer of the same year after a support appearance for The Clean in the Hamburg" Fabrik ".

In the first years after the Jesterbells, the label only had bands under contract that either emerged from this group or belonged to the mutual circle of friends: The direct successor bands Red Letter Day and The 5 Friends , who in turn recruited from these two bands, My Guru Says and Friends of the label The Legendary Bang from Itzehoe and later also the Red Letter Day successor Knabenkraut 1995. In summer 1991 the Swedish band Acid House Kings became aware of the music of Red Letter Day and got in touch with Marsh-Marigold Records. After successful negotiations, the Acid House Kings released their debut single Play Pop! In January 1992 as the first band outside of the founding circle . on Marsh-Marigold Records. In this way the contact to the Nordic indie scene was established, which in the following time numerous bands from Scandinavia were signed to Marsh-Marigold Records. Since 1994 Marsh-Marigold Records has also increasingly released bands that do not come from their own environment or Scandinavia, but also from neighboring countries such as France.

Right from the start, the label refrained from marketing the same sound carrier multiple times in different formats. In addition, only bands are signed that have not yet been released and have passed Oliver Goetzl's special taste test. The label's recent successful discoveries were the Scandinavians Cats on Fire , Love Dance , This Year's Model and Gulo . For some time Oliver has been supported by his Knabenkraut band colleague Björn Steffens, who is also responsible for ensuring that the Marsh-Marigold Records catalog is available in the various download shops. In December 2013, Marsh-Marigold Records celebrated its 25th anniversary with a two-day festival in Hamburg's "Nachtasyl" at the Thalia Theater : Participating bands were Red Letter Day , The Soda Stream , The Legendary Bang and Alaska on December 27th 2013 and orchid , Gulo , Honey Heads , Spy and Les Frères Checkolade December 29, 2013.
