Martha Gubler-Waigand (born February 20, 1902 in Freiburg im Breisgau as Martha Elisabeth , † July 19, 2005 in Weinfelden ) was a Swiss photographer .

biography

Martha Gubler-Waigand was the daughter of the stonemason Andreas Waigand (1862-1924) and Maria Barbara, née Hermann (1863-1945). From 1916 to 1919 she completed an apprenticeship as a photographer in Freiburg i. Br. With Luise Margarete Engler and Helene Strieb-Bauschinger in the “Atélier Lichtkunst”. Since she could n't find a job due to the difficult economic circumstances in Germany , she moved to Frauenfeld , where she made a living as a branch manager in the AR Schatzmann photo studio from 1922 to 1925.

From 1926 to 1930 she worked as a trained photographer in photo shops in Lucerne , Olten and Bern . In April 1930 she opened her own photo studio at Hubgasse 7 in Weinfelden, which she ran until 1962. She was the first professional photographer in the canton of Thurgau . Her name soon stood for excellent photographs, especially her children's pictures and portraits were known. During her professional career she trained twelve apprentices and attended various advanced training courses. She continued the business after her retirement, together with her son Peter, also a photographer.

Since 1934 Martha Gubler-Waigand was married to the building restorer , painter and wood sculptor Conrad Gubler (1904–1997) and was able to support the family of six with her income.

In January 1997 an exhibition of Martha Gubler-Waigand's work took place in the former photo shop. The “ Thurgauer Frauenarchiv ” (TFA) is in possession of the estate of Martha Gubler-Waigand. This mainly includes portrait photographs, but also object and landscape photographs. It is the largest coherent professional photo estate from a photographer from Thurgau. The more than 17,000 photos have been digitized and are stored in the Thurgau State Archives.
