Martha P. Haynes and Riccardo Giovanelli
Martha Patricia Haynes (born January 1, 1951 in Boston , Massachusetts ) is an American astronomer .
Haynes studied at Wellesley College (BA 1973) and at Indiana University (MA 1975, PhD 1978). She worked at the Arecibo Observatory (National Astronomy and Ionosphere Center) until 1981 , when she became deputy director of the Green Bank Observatory . In 1983 she went to Cornell University , where she is a professor.
Her research is concerned with the spatial distribution and development of galaxies, especially spiral galaxies. She often uses observations in the 21 cm line of atomic hydrogen, which are obtained at the Arecibo Observatory.
