Riccardo Giovanelli (born August 30, 1946 in Gattatico , Reggio Emilia ) is an Italian astronomer who researches in the field of radio and radar astronomy .

Life

In 1976 he obtained his Ph.D. at Indiana University . In 1989 he was awarded the Henry Draper Medal of the National Academy of Sciences . He currently teaches as Professor of Astronomy at Cornell University .

research

Giovanelli's interest is in observational cosmology. Here he researches galaxies , especially their structure, development and environment. In the 1980s, Giovanelli studied the structures of the visible universe by measuring the redshift of distant galaxies. In 1989, he and Martha P. Haynes were awarded the Henry Draper Medal for mapping and creating the first three-dimensional model of the visible universe. He is currently investigating ways of determining the distance of galaxies without measuring the redshift. Further research focuses of his work are the structure of galaxy clusters , the determination of cosmological parameters and the properties of peculiar velocity fields in the universe. His last investigation showed that the changes in speed between very dense and less dense areas of the universe are less than expected.
