Marthe Ernst-Schwarzenbach

Marthe Ernst-Schwarzenbach (born January 24, 1900 in Kilchberg ZH ; † August 27, 1967 Zurich ) was a private lecturer and adjunct professor of botany at the University of Zurich .

Life

Marthe Ernst-Schwarzenbach was born on January 24, 1900 in Kilchberg as the daughter of Arnold Schwarzenbach and his wife Suzanne Fürst. She attended private school in Zurich and studied according to their maturity in 1921 science at the Universities of Geneva and Zurich. With a major in botany, she received her doctorate in 1926 and also obtained a teaching diploma in Zurich. Then worked as a teacher in middle schools. Her interests in genetics led her to Vilmorin-Andrieux in Paris in 1929 and then to the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Breeding Research , where she worked under Erwin Baur .

In 1930 Marthe Schwarzenbach married her former teacher Alfred Ernst and took him on a study trip to Indonesia and Malaysia lasting several months. On this trip she collected the material for her habilitation thesis, which was accepted in 1939. From 1939 on she worked as a private lecturer in embryology, cytology and genetics (emphasis on mosses and algae) at the University of Zurich, and from 1950 as adjunct professor . From 1947 to 1965 she edited the annual report of the Swiss Society for Heredity Research. During the same period she was in charge of the archive of the Julius Klaus Foundation for Heredity Research, Social Anthropology and Racial Hygiene, as well as the Swiss section of "Resumptio Genetica".

Besides Clara Zollikofer , Marthe Schwarzenbach was the only lecturer at the Institute for General Botany in the interwar period. She was a member of the Social Democratic Party of Switzerland, where she actively campaigned for the advancement of women.
