Martim Codax (also Martín Codax ) was a Galician trobador of the 13th century. Practically nothing is known about his life. Presumably he lived in the Galician coastal city of Vigo .

The name Martim Codax is in principle synonymous with the seven traditional Cantigas de amigo , which are dated to around 1230 and are among the earliest known songs in the Galician-Portuguese language. The theme of his cantigas are women eagerly waiting for the return of their lovers. The ever-circling, unfulfilled longing is expressed in these chants through both lyrical and melodic repetitions. In addition to the Cantigas de Santa Maria , the songs of Martim Codax are the only cantigas for which - apart from the sixth - the music has been passed down.

The music of Martim Codax was not rediscovered until 1913, when a page of a manuscript was found in the cover of a book.
